What is Floppy Disk? - Types, History Full Information

Hello Friends Welcome to ITUPDATES Today we are going to tell you about Floppy Disk in this post, in which you will get to learn about Floppy Disk, we hope that you will like our post. so are you excited!

Very few people will know what Floppy Disk is and how and why it is being used, if you do not know about it, then we will give you complete information about it, so that our post will be started from beginning to end. so let's start What is Floppy Disk.

What is Floppy Disk? - Types, History Full Information

What is Floppy Disk?

A floppy disk is a portable computer storage device that allows easy handling of data. It is commonly used with personal computers, notebook computers, and word processors

Such disks consist of flat circular plates made of metal or plastic and coated with iron oxide. When a disk is inserted into a computer's disk drive, the information on this coating can be magnetized, which can then allow for easy location and retrieval of the same location.

History of Floppy Disk?

Floppy Disk Drive was invented at IBM in 1967 by Allan Sugart. The first Floppy Drive used an 8 Inch Disk which was later called Diskette as it became smaller which evolved into a 5.25 Inch Disk which was first used on IBM's Personal Computer in August 1981.

The 5.25 Inch Disk had 360 KB compared to the 1.44 MB capacity of today's 3.5-Inch Diskette. 5.25 Inch Disk was called Floppy because Disk Packaging was a very flexible plastic material

Improvements in Magnetic Recording Media by 1980, as well as improved designs by Read, Write, Head, made use of the much less flexible 3.5-Inch, 1.44-Megabytes (MB) capacity Floppy Disk Drive.

For some years, the size of Floppy Disk Drive in computers was both 3.5 Inch and 5.25 Inch. But by 1990, the version of 5.25 Inch had become popular.

Types of Floppy Disk?

Several types of Floppy Disk have been developed. But in today's time the size of Floppy has reduced and storage capacity has increased.

In the 1990s, other media, including Hard Disk Drive, Zip Drive, Optical Drive and USB Flash Drive, have started to replace Floppy Disk as the primary storage medium.

The first Floppy Disk 8 Inch to come on the market was 200 mm. This Disk was secured by a Flexible Plastic Jacket.

In the late 1970s, 8 Inch Disk could store 1MB of data. But this was followed by a Small Version 5.25-Inch (133 mm) Floppy of the same design which could store the same amount of information using High Density Media and Recording Techniques.

There are many different types of Floppy Disk such as -

5 ¼ -Inch Drive
3 ½ -Inch Drive
Zip drive
Formatting
Legacy

(1) 5 ¼ -Inch Drive

A 5 In-Inch Floppy Disk Drive was common on personal computers built during the 1980s and was still included on computers in the early 1990s.

A 5 ¼-Inch Floppy Disk can store between 360 Kilobytes and 1.2 Megabyte Data. Some 5 ½-Floppy disk can be modified and used to write data on both sides of the disk.

With this, the manufacturers prepared double-sided drives that could read both sides of the disk.

(2) 3 ½ -Inch Drive

A 3½ inch Floppy Drive is considered a Floppy Drive because the Diskette uses Magnetic Floppy Disk fitted in Plastic.

A 3 ½-Inch Floppy Disk is storing 730 Kilobytes on a Double Density Disk and 1.44 Megabyte on a High Density Disk.

The only way to load a program like Windows 3.0 on an old computer was to use multiple disks to install the program.

(3) Zip drive

Zip Drive was introduced by the Iomega Corporation in the mid-1990s. A Zip Disk was able to store 100 Megabyte, 250 Megabyte and even 750 Megabyte on one disk.

Zip Drive was primarily available as Peripheral that could be added to existing systems. A Zip Drive did a High Value Tag that limits its use and eventually led to its downfall as a Popular Storage Medium.

(4) Formatting

Each type of Floppy Disk needs to be formatted to store data on the disk. Formatted the diskette uses a process called low-level Format.

This will write the disk to the disk which is a Specific Byte Size which is usually 512 Bytes per region.

This process performed by the hardware present in the Floppy Disk Drive that allows the Operating System to read and write the Formatted Disk.

(5) Legacy

5 ¼-Inch and 3½-Inch Floppy Disk Drive are almost obsolete as a storage medium. In the event of a system problem, a Floppy Disk Drive can still be used to boot to Command Prompt.

Floppy Disk is sometimes used for Computer BIOS Upgrade, but even that use is being phased. Computer manufacturers are not installing Floppy Drive in new machines today.
